POMHPY Development Process

Step 1: Preliminary Research

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced and exacerbated many of the mental health challenges faced by youth. As a response, we began developing POMHPY — a mental wellness program created for youth, with youth.

After a thorough review of the current evidence base, we identified three areas of need that correspond to POMHPY’s pillars of focus:

  • Mental wellbeing and resilience

  • Physical wellness

  • Social connectedness

Step 2: Program Development

Once we identified our focus areas, we put together an interdisciplinary team of experts and began program development. We engaged youth via numerous methods and used their feedback to inform the development process.

We also captured and integrated insights from youth-focused partners from Waypoint and across Ontario. Progress updates were sent through our quarterly POMHPY Newsletters. After months of work, we finalized the six-sessions that make up POMHPY, each of which are described in this infographic.

Check out some of the ways we’ve integrated knowledge translation while developing POMHPY:

  • We consulted with youth within and outside of Waypoint throughout the development of POMHPY.

  • Throughout the development of POMHPY, we asked Ontario youth to provide survey feedback on foundational factors such as program structure, format, and content.

  • POMHPY Youth Facilitators conducted two rounds of youth focus groups to gather additional feedback on POMHPY elements, including specific session activities, Wellness Journal design and content, and messaging boards’ functionality.

  • Before launch, we conducted a trial run to gather feedback on the functionality, structure, and design of our website.

  • We held quarterly CRG Town Hall meetings to gather feedback and respond to questions and concerns from youth, partners, and stakeholders interested in POMHPY.

  • POMHPY Youth Facilitators piloted Session 1 of the program. Participants provided feedback on the flow and relevancy of the session.

Step 4: Program Implementation

Before scaling POMHPY across Ontario, we piloted the program in the Simcoe/Muskoka region. Surveys and interviews in this stage helped us gather participant feedback and evaluate the program. This process helped us maximize POMHPY's impact and ensure it provides the best possible support for young people's mental health before its available to a wider audience.

We want to thank all the youth who actively participated in our POMHPY pilot program. Your valuable feedback contributes significantly, and we appreciate your commitment to making this initiative a success.

Step 5: Scaling Up the Project

We are currently recruiting youth to participate in the scaling up of the project across Ontario! If you or anyone you know might be interested in participating in POMPHY, please review the eligibility criteria and fill out the form on our Sign Up Page!
